A Stand
Down is a complex operation and we recognize that the
strength of a stand down is in the diversity of the

Checking up on
homeless veterans
Kelvin Stokes, 58, of Detroit gets his teeth checked
by Dr. Laila Ochana on Wednesday at the 2009 Stand Down
event, where hundreds of homeless veterans gathered at the
Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit to receive assistance
with food, shelter and clothing as well as health screenings
and Veterans Affairs and Social Security benefits
counseling. The American Red Cross, Southeastern Michigan
Chapter, handed out comfort kits that contained personal
hygiene products as well as socks and blankets and were
funded by a grant from the Michigan Grand Lodge of Free and
Accepted Masons to support the chapter's Military Services
program. The program provides counseling and advocacy for
veterans attempting to obtain benefits, emergency
communications between troops and relatives at home, and
financial aid for military families.
